About CIARI System

The Citycot Institute for Applied Research & Innovation (CIARI) is a multidisciplinary research and innovation hub established under Citycot University, based in Bosaso, Puntland, Somalia. CIARI serves as a platform for advancing evidence-based research, policy development, and practical innovation that addresses critical development challenges in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa. CIARI is committed to bridge the gap between academic research, policy-making, and real-world implementation. The Institute focuses on generating high-quality, policy-relevant knowledge that informs decision-making, strengthens institutions, and supports sustainable development. Our work is guided by a strong emphasis on applied research, ensuring that all outputs contribute to tangible improvements in communities, governance systems, and economic sectors.

Our History

The Citycot Institute for Applied Research & Innovation (CIARI) was established as part of Citycot University’s strategic vision to strengthen research capacity, institutional development, and community impact in Somalia.

Recognizing the growing need for locally driven, evidence-based solutions, the University initiated CIARI to address key gaps in research coordination, publication, and policy engagement.

Foundation Phase

CIARI was conceptualized to:

Institutionalize research within the university
Promote a strong research culture among faculty and students
Align academic work with national and regional development priorities

During its early phase, the Institute focused on:

Establishing governance structures
Developing research policies and standard operating procedures
Building internal research capacity

Growth & Expansion

Following its establishment, CIARI expanded its scope to include:

Multidisciplinary faculty research programs
Development of research priority-setting frameworks
Launch of collaborative studies in health, environment, and digital innovation
Engagement with government institutions, NGOs, and development partners

The Institute also began supporting publication pipelines, ensuring that research outputs meet international academic standards.
